    GIVE BLOOD Empty GIVE BLOOD

    Post  chappy1 Wed Apr 28, 2010 3:17 am

    i gave blood yesterday (27th time)while i was there i gave a sample to be tested for platelets,i am now waiting for results.if my count is hige enough i can donate platelets(instead of blood)platelet donation will help a lot more peeps.it takes more dedication though as its 8 times a year, and each session means going to brum and being hooked up 2 a machine (takes half a day with traveling)
    does anyone else give blood or platelets??
    and if not,why not. giving blood is (v nearly)pain free and dosnt take long. give it a go, it gives me a buzz to know ime doing my bit Very Happy

    I give blood, chappy but unfortunately I'm unable to give platelets. It all depends on not just the count but the accessibility of your veins as they need to put bigger needles in to put the red blood cells back into you whilst taking the platelets. Unfortunately, mine hide!

    It really is vital that all healthy adults give blood but so many don't. At my work only 60 of the 300 employees give even though we get paid time to do it!

    Well done on 27.

    They are very proactive. They come to my work with a van and do 60 people in 1 day. There is 3 women with 2 who work for very little pay. Maybe they should come and get it more, but that would cost money, something the NHS has very little of because of sponging tossers and free prescriptions for every Tom, Dick and Harry.

    I know what you mean, Chris! It's a right pain whenever you go to these areas but I suppose it's better to be fsafe than sorry. What they do need to make clear to people, however is that it is OK to give blood even if:

    a) You've been to Europe;
    b) You've got high blood pressure (depending on the tablets);
    c) You drink;
    d) You smoke;
    e) You're overweight;
    f) many other things that people get mixed up with.

    A personal thanks to all that do give blood.
    cheers clap

    Blood is made in the bone marrow. It is composed of red blood cells, platelets, plasma and white blood cells, collectively referred to as blood components. Donations given at our regular blood donation sessions are referred to as "Whole Blood". Platelets are very small cells. They work with the clotting factors in plasma to form a mesh "plug" to stop or prevent bleeding. Plasma is the fluid part of the blood. It contains protein, salts and clotting factors. White cells fight harmful bacteria and help prevent infection. Red cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the tissues.

    I done my bit by suggesting it to our work forum team member.

    She will take it to the forum and if it is deemed a worthwhile idea for the whole group then the blood people will be contacted and asked to come along to our work.

    Yahooooo - Nice work. It's a shame only about 70 will probably donate (scared of needles, can't be bothered, on certain pills, ignorant, religion) but that's 70 more than the day before!

    Great work CARN!
