There are 3 bags, each containg 2 socks.

One bag has 2 blacks socks, one bag has 2 white socks, and the other has 1 of each colour.

The bags are each labelled as to their contents, with "2 black", "2 white", and "1 of each"

however all the labels are wrong

You can check the colour of one or both socks from any 1 or more bags of your choice.

What is the minimum number of socks you would need to check to know definitely what all 3 bags contain?

There are 20 socks in a box.

10 of them are red, and 10 of them are yellow.

What is the minimum number of socks you need to take out, without looking, to insure that you get a matching pair of the same colour?

A father and his son were involved in a car crash.

The father died, and the son was critically injured.

The emergency servies arrived on scene, and whisked the son away to the hospital.

They soon realised he needed surgery immediately to save his life.

They quickly get him prepped up for the operating table and rush him in

The surgeon comes in, and is about to start the procedure, but suddenly stops and says "I cant operate on this boy... He's my son!"

    Who is the surgeon???

and another queueing men in hats one for you Nick...

A crazy king gets 3 prisoners, who are all in the stocks for a week.

He removes them, and lines them up in a queue, all facing forward, and places a hat on each of their heads. They can see the hats in front of them, but not their own or any behind them.

He tells the men that their hats are either black or white. he also tells them there were only 3 black hats and 2 white hats.

He then tells them that he is going to ask them in turn, starting from the back, what colour their hat is.

If they dont know, and say so, he will put them back in the stocks for a week.

If they answer and get it right, he'll give them a 1000 gold pieces (A goodly sum at the current exchange rates).

however if they answer and get it wrong, he'' have them excecuted immediately.

He asks the bloke at the back, who thinks for a minute, but then says he doesnt know, and the king sends him back to the stocks.

He asks the second bloke, he thinks for a while longer, but again says he doesnt know and gets sent back to the stocks.

Finally he asks the prisoner at the front.

The prisoner correctly tells the king the colour of his hat, and is given his reward and sent home to enjoy it!

What colour was his hat, and how did he know?????

usual rules apply - no other communication, and no planning in advance this time Smile

Such an odd fascination about sorting socks ?

Last time I wore matching socks was the APAT World championship, and they were straight out the packet.

    1 uneventful bus ride later...

    1. Can be done with one sock provided you take it out of the bag with the 'one of each' label. This will then tell you which bag it is as it can't be the 'one of each' bag if they are all labelled incorrectly. The two remaining bags will be labelled with the two colours, one of which will be the coulour of your chosen sock. That one will be the 'one of each bag' and the third bag by deduction will be the other colour.

(what a horribly complicated description - hope it makes sense)

    2. Still working on this but if you want to be 100% then surely it has to be 12 socks, although i wouldn't bank on it taking that long (92378 to 1 chance of needing 11 picks)

    3. His hat is black providing the other 2 don't intentially want to be back in the stocks.
If the guy at the back doesn't know then the guys in front must have either both black hats or one white and one black. If the middle guy doesn't know (and he's also figured out why the back guy didn't know) then the hat he sees must be black, meaning his could be either. The guy in front is the smarter of the three if he's figured all this out. well done him.

    I thank you
