over betting nuts! Empty over betting nuts!

Post  LANGERS Mon Jan 26, 2009 11:47 am

ok experts!! here is my problem and i do it time and time again!!

last week i was sitting second in the stars 20$ freezeout and had a big stack, around 45k,chippie was i think 49k and we were more or less dominant over what remained.

he was sitting in my bb and we both saw a flop.i hit KKK(pocket kings in my hand of something like 23kk) and i pot bet it.he called.turn gave him a flush draw, but i was still ahead, pot bet it something like 16k now and the fucker still called, hit his flush and more or less disabled me(think i went out two hands later).

The point i am making really or am wondering amongst those of you who are far better than me,is should i be pot betting when i have nuts,or should i be giving myself some sort of fold equity? am i giving him odds to call, however dreadful his call may be? i find i have done this a lot when in strong positions, flopping the nuts, betting it,then being called and ultimately outdrawn.mainly in omaha hilo where frankly the outs to beat me are generally much higher.interested in any views on this, from both a hilo and of course a holdem player perspective.

hope my point is clear,as i tend to waffle lol.

woof couple of very un fun hands there m8 ul.

My first rule of hilo unfortunately applies to both these hands - Dont play KK. Unless the other 2 cards are both wheel cards, i flat fold KK. Just so sick the number of times it gets done over like that. I've gone out of hil tourns with KK so many times it's not funny.

Without 2 wheel cards you're just drawing to 2 outs or a second nut flush. Thats ok in hold'em and omaha, but in hilo the extra draw potential of a possible low coupled with wrap str8 draws, people just can't fold, as you know.

So, for starters, dont play KK lol. Im serious tho, I literally flat fold it in hilo tourns unless it has 2 (different) wheel cards with it.

This is well demonstrated in the KK22 hand - on the K78 flop against his hand you've actually only got about 50% equity! With him having 3 low cards, meaning he can hit any low card to take half, he's going to hit a low about 70% of the time, leaving you scooping about 25%!!

When i find myself in this situation, where i have top trips but no back up str8 low or flush draws, i tend to bet small on the flop, with the hope of building the pot by getting more than one caller.

Hopefully you size it right so that you get more than one caller, and if the turn brings in something where KK is still nuts, but not house or quads, then you can make the full pot bet for a similar size to the one you made after betting full pot on flop. The difference now is that your oppo hasnt committed as much money to the pot. He's getting bad odds either way by this point, but if he put less in on the flop, he'll feel less committed, and you might get a fold.

Ofthen theres nowt you can do, and you do want to get some chips in the pot, but without any back up draws, youre often best off not gettting in the situation in the first place.

Incidentally in the KK22 hand, with 50% equity, you'd of had over 70% equity holding A2KK, and the same 70% holding even KK24. I refer you to my first rule lol.

If you were playing omaha, the KK22 hand you would have 73% equity, but hilo is a bit more sneaky lol.

makes a lot of sense when put like that mate, that is exactly the kind of answer i was hoping for.i think in the heat of battle you see and know your ahead and its hard not to aggrssively play it to get the fold, but as we know, often folding is never in the mind of the other player.

i think i need to improve on my thinking and take my time a bit more when in hands,i think i rush a tad.cheers for the post, that's the kind of reply i was after, cheers.
